Experience Design Resources

This is a list of some of the best resources I've found on a variety of topics related to Experience Design. By no means is this list complete or exhaustive. Indeed, I'm only highlighting what I feel are the best, most helpful resources. Also, I am constantly adding to this list and it never even reflects my total ideal list--only what I've managed to post at any given time.

Information Design/Architecture

 Books  Online Articles
  • Information Design edited by Robert Jacobson, Ph.D., 1999 MIT Press, ISBN 026210069X
This book covers a vast range of topics in the area of Information Design. My Unified Field Theory of Design paper is in this book.
  • Information Architects Richard Saul Wurman, 1997 Watson-Guptill Publishers, ISBN 1888001380
This is a coffee-table type book, filled with lots of examples of good information solutions but it doesn't have much how-to information. Instead there are interesting examples of a variety of problems solved in innovative ways.
  • Information Anxiety Richard Saul Wurman, 1989 Doubleday, ISBN 0553348566
This is a great book that discusses the nature of information design. While it suffers from some of its own criticism, it is readable and insightful.
  • Information Anxiety 2 Richard Saul Wurman, David Sume, Loring Leifer , 2000 Que, ISBN 0789724103
This update borrows partly from the original but adds a lot of new information and articles from others.
  • The Visual Display of Quantitative Information Edward Tufte, 1983 Graphics Press, ISBN 096139210X
An important source of ideas and guidelines for making charts and graphs that communicate effectively. It touches on how to maximize the amount of data in a chart, graphical editing, derivation of new designs, use of colors, proportion and scaling, typography, grids, and the comparative effectiveness of sentences, tables and graphics. Clearly the best of his three books (the later two include much of the work from this one).
  • Envisioning Information Edward Tufte, 1990 Graphics Press, ISBN 0961392118
This is one of the premier books on information design. It covers most of the aspects of graphically representing information in many forms (graphs, charts, lists, maps, etc.). The section on color and computer interface design are good for starters but these don't go into nearly enough detail.
  • Hats, Design Quarterly #145 Richard Saul Wurman, 1989 MIT Press
A distillation of ideas from Information Anxiety, fitting many important design concepts into 32 pages. Introduces the metaphor of "information hatracks" as a way of explaining the importance of organization as a tool for understanding. "...there are really only five general ways to organize information--what I call the five hatracks: Alphabet, Time, Location, Continuum or Magnitude, and Category."
  • The Age of Missing Information Bill McKibben, 1992 Plume/Penguin, ISBN 0452269806
This is a very balanced, grounding book that reminds us about the role of information in our lives and what is and isn't remarkable about the "Information Age."
  • The Language of Graphics Yuri Englehardt, 2002 Yuri Englehardt, ISBN 9057760894
  • Don't Make Me aThink Steve Krug, 2000 New Riders, ISBN 0789723107
  • Powers of Ten Philip & Phylis Morrison, 1994 W. H. Freeman, ISBN 0716760088, www.powersoften.com
  • Powers of Ten (video) Charles and Ray Eames, 1978 Pyramid Home Video, ISBN 6302179815
  • The Work of Charles and Ray Eames Donald Albrecht (Editor), 1997 Harry N. Abrams, ISBN 0810917998
  • Contextual Design Hugh Beyer and Karen Holtzblatt, 1997 Morgan Kaufmann , ISBN 1558604111
  • Readings in Information Visualization Stuart K. Card, Jock D. MacKinlay (Editor), Ben Shneiderman (Editor), 1999 Morgan Kaufmann, ISBN 1558605339
  • Usability: Turning Technologies into Tools Paul S. Adler and Terry A. Winograd (editors), 1992 Oxford University Press, ISBN 0195075102

While this book is sometimes too simplistic, it is a great insight into the effects mega-branding is having on our societies. Well worth reading.
