VirtualPaint application prototype

VirtualPaint application prototype

This was a prototype for a new kind of painting software that would mimick natural painting media in a sophisticated way. It would use specially designed input devices that created more natural paint data and was more comfortable to use. 1988 Participants: Nathan Shedroff: Information, Interaction, and Visual Design, Production   VirtualPaint had controls for setting minute paper, media, and surface characteristics. Much of Fractal Design Painter 4.0 now does was designed into...
Fairlane Mall Directory Kiosk

Fairlane Mall Directory Kiosk

This was a kiosk directory to stores and merchandise in a large shopping mall. It’s interface was built to be used by customers looking for a variety of things in a variety of ways. The kiosk allows people to navigate the mall’s three floors visually as well as search textually by name, keyword, and category. It also was designed to print a route map at the station so that users could follow it to their destination. 1989 Participants: Nathan Shedroff: Information, Interaction, and Visual Design, Production Joachim Muller-Lance:...
Colleague computer (school years)

Colleague computer (school years)

This was a student project from my last semester of school. I did an independent study with Andy Ogden at Art Center College of Design about developing next-generation computers to respond to specific needs in the Information Age. My theory was that few computers were actually information appliances and, instead, were merely data appliances. I wanted to create a device that was more fluid to use in terms of information as well as the work environment....
Checker Taxicab Project (school years)

Checker Taxicab Project (school years)

In my industrial design graphics class, we were given the assignment to design an identity and exterior graphics program for the Checker Taxicab Company. I chose to do something “retro” and developed a program that extended to the stationary, uniforms, and interior. I also designed a program of artist-inspired special editions to renew interest in the Checker cabs. I based the platform on a taxi design by Giorgetto Guigaro (we weren’t asked and didn’t have time to design the car itself), though I did smooth the exterior design. I also designed a terminal to be used by the driver and a terminal for the passengers with an integrated travel guide. Lastly, I designed a limosine version with more understated and higher-quality materials. 1987...
Macmobile: The Automobile as Appliance (school years)

Macmobile: The Automobile as Appliance (school years)

What would the Macintosh equivalent of an automobile be like? This was one of my senior theses at Art Center College of Design. The idea for Macmobile was that cars should become as easy to use, care for, and live with as appliances. They should be smart and capable of many of the advances now standard in the world of personal computers. 1989 Andy Odgen: Advisor     Could a car be as easy to use and maintain as a refrigerator? What kind of car could be the next to succeed behind the Citroen 2CV, the VW Bug, the VW Rabbit, and the Honda Civic Series? Cars for people who want transportation-not trouble. The Appliance: There was a time when appliances wre relatively rare and appropriatly unreliable, both for use and repair. Now, appliances such as refrigerators, tlelphones, televisions, and the like are more than commonplace, they are almost necessities. There is little anxiety associated with most of these products because their operation and maintenance is so simple: you plug it in and it works. Technology is now making it possible to associtate this level of simplicity and reliability with transportation. This does not mean that the automobile must be simplisitic in its capabilities. In fact, it will continue to be more sophisticated in its uses and capabilities. However, they will meet our needs in clearer ways as we allow automobiles to take on more responsibilities.       Interior Oriented: Rather than spend the majority of time on the exterior styling, a smarter car can be developed by caring more for the interior where drivers and passengers spend the majority of their...
